The stories of Argentine writer Julio Cortázar convey a quest for identity, an obsession with the mysteries behind everyday reality, and an existential torment manifested in the fantastic. Using archival footage of the author and extensive commentary from his contemporaries—including biographer Mario Goloboff, filmmaker Manuel Antin, and former Argentine president Raúl Alfonsín—this program examines the major events of Cortázar’s wide-ranging life and career. His birth in Belgium, his early years as a school teacher, and his relationships with revolutionary leaders are all presented in detail, along with astute analysis of his complex and enigmatic work.
