Many of the mathematical concepts we use today were developed by civilizations in the Indus valley and predate the number systems of virtually all other cultures by several centuries. This program examines the basic tenets of the ancient Indian place-value system and studies advances in geometry that occurred during the Vedic Period. Focusing on the early urban centers of Harappa and Mohenjo Daro, the film highlights the development of mud brick technology and grid-pattern city planning, both of which require accurate weights and measures. Students will explore the Brahmi numeral system, the accomplishments of astronomer Brahmagupta, the significance of mathematical sutras, and other topics. A Discovery Channel Production.
