With the aid of sophisticated numerical sequencing, the ancient Maya performed feats of astronomy and engineering that rivaled—and took place independently of—advances in medieval Europe. This program demonstrates many of their findings and provides animated views of the Mayan vigesimal place-value system. Comparing Hindu-Arabic number symbols with the more efficient Mayan character set (dot, bar, and shell), the film shows how this notation was used in calculations and emphasizes its role as the preeminent mathematical system of Pre-Columbian America. Students will also discover the importance of the Mayan pyramids in the ancient empire’s irrigation network. A Discovery Channel Production. (31 minutes)
