To understand the nature of substance abuse and why an individual succumbs to addiction, a wide range of factors must be examined. This program follows Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, as she conducts informal group therapy with addicts and their family members. Volkow points out the environmental, behavioral, and genetic influences that make people vulnerable to addiction and outlines ways in which addiction creates abnormal behavior. Additionally, Volkow uses brain imaging to illustrate the neurological impact of drugs and alcohol. Some content may be objectionable. An HBO Production. (23 minutes)
