See life through the eyes of some of history’s greatest painters; see art through the eyes of some of today’s greatest art authorities. This series of 20 programs presents a way of looking at paintings that allows the viewer time to examine a single painting at a time, exploring it in depth. The paintings range in place and time from medieval China to the London of Whistler and Turner, from 14th-century Italy to 20th-century America. Across this spectrum, styles and fashions in painting have varied, but despite the centuries and cultures which separate them, painters have remained fascinated by the same human preoccupations and activities. The paintings’ domestic and familiar subject matter transcend conventional categories used by art historians. And it is the subject matter that forms the threads that bind the selected paintings together in twenty themes. Robert Rosenblum, Edwin Mullins, Richard Cork, Alistair Smith, Hugh Casson, David Piper, and Milton Brown are among the commentators. 20-part series, 50 minutes each.
