Sure it sounds strange, but the use of spaghetti in building model bridges is a great way to demonstrate some basic principles of engineering. Spaghetti reacts to the five forces of Compression, Tension, Bending, Shear, and Torsion, much in the same way that conventional building materials do. By using spaghetti to construct a model bridge, students can examine the effects of these forces individually and combined. This video begins with a history of spaghetti bridge building contests and lists the categories of competition. After outlining the standard rules of construction, it then follows the building of various bridges and their performance in competition. Included are highlights of the international spaghetti bridge building contest at Okanagan College in British Columbia, Canada. An interesting and creative way to learn about bridge building. One 15-minute video. A Shopware Production.
