Updated for 2008! Almost all new vehicles have on-board diagnostic capabilities, so it is critical for technicians-in-training to be well-grounded in the technology. This video explains the general operation and many of the fine points of on-board diagnostic systems. With an overview of the evolution of OBD technology, the program illustrates the different systems within a car—brakes, electrical, steering, etc.—that an OBD-II system monitors and troubleshoots. Viewers will receive valuable instruction in diagnostic trouble codes, high input failure, low input failure, types of sensors, and using a digital thermometer to verify specific codes. Dealing with older vehicles and reverting to low-tech methods are also explored. Correlates to all National CTE Organizational Standards (including the provisions of the Perkins Act). A viewable/printable instructor’s guide is available online. A Shopware Production. (14 minutes)
