Although an average American spends fully a third of life sleeping, sleep remains one of the least understood of human activities. In this program, host Kat Carney sheds light on the phenomenon of sleep as she stays awake for 24 hours to experience firsthand the effects of sleep deprivation. Experts from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Chronobiology Research Institute, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and elsewhere discuss conditions including insomnia, narcolepsy, sleepwalking, and sleep apnea. The five stages of sleep, types of brain waves, the purpose of dreaming, and the effects of jet lag and shift work are also considered. A Discovery Channel Production.
