Wilderness, this program tells us, is a state of mind, a dream of peace, a return to the primeval world before humans tried to remake nature for their own convenience. But the American wilderness was also something that, when this country was being built, represented danger or existed as something that had to be endured before prospectors or traders could get to the other side, whatever was on the other side. Here we see the world’s first designated wilderness area, New Mexico’s Gila Wilderness, with its pristine natural wonders and its relics from the past: the now-lost grizzly bear; prehistoric Indian cave dwellers; and memories of the Apaches, Spaniards, and Anglos who sought to escape the wilderness and build civilization.
