Since Charles Darwin formulated his theory of natural selection, our view of the world has changed. Although Darwin’s theory itself has "evolved," scientists agree that living species slowly but surely diverged from common ancestors. This program begins with a segment on fossils, one of the most convincing proofs of evolution. It then retraces the major steps of evolution as they were uncovered by science. It also presents the major theories of evolution. (23 minutes)

Selection and Adaptation

This program illustrates the selection by environmental constraints of the more favorable variations in a population and the inheritance of these variations by succeeding generations, resulting eventually in a population of plants and animals most of...(more details)

DNA and the Evidence for Evolution
View Video Clip
This program shows the structure and replicating processes of DNA and the effect of genetic mutation; demonstrates the Lederberg Experiment; and recapitulates the evidence provided by fossils and structural and biological homologies that the process ...(more details)

The Record of the Rocks

This program shows the process of sedimentation, which has preserved those life forms extant at the time the rock was formed and-most strikingly where the Colorado River has cut through the Grand Canyon-exposes a veritable history of life on earth; p...(more details)

Genetics

The discovery of how genes are organized, how they reproduce, and how they affect the next generation of cells revolutionized the way we understand life. This program unravels the deoxyribonucleic acid molecule DNA, the helical two-stranded chain, an...(more details)
